As part of the University of Stuttgart’s 20-year-plus partnership with the German University in Cairo (GUC), John Nixon, the Head of the English Department at the Language Center, paid a visit for the first time to the English and Scientific Methods Department (ESMD) in New Cairo in August. The goals of this visit were twofold: to assess the curriculum, pedagogy and quality management practices at the ESMD in Cairo as well as to determine areas for cooperation and exchange.
The work carried out by the academic English instructors at the GUC is exemplary and it was clear that there are many areas for partnership. Starting next year teacher and student exchanges are planned as is a COIL course (collaborative online international learning) in academic English. A summer school for Egyptian students at the University of Stuttgart’s Language Center is also under discussion.
The GUC is one of the most successful transnational educational projects supported by the German government and one of the top universities in Egypt. The University of Stuttgart has supported this young university from the outset alongside the DAAD, the Federal Ministry of Education and Research as well as other universities in Baden-Württemberg. The programs on offer vary from engineering, information technology, pharmacy, applied sciences and arts, management and law. All of the degree programs have been accredited by ACQUIN and there are currently around 10,000 students enrolled in the various bachelor and master programs.
