At some stage in their careers most academics today will be called upon to disseminate the results of their research in English, be it in the form of an abstract, a submission for a paper at a conference, an article for an academic journal or even a thesis or book. While many academics in Germany possess a relatively high level of English-language competence, they often run into difficulties when putting pen to paper. This often comes down to interference from their mother tongue as well as stylistic differences between English and German in academic writing. This workshop will attempt to identify the main problem areas non-native speakers have when writing in English and provide tips on how to improve their writing. Furthermore, peer review and individual coaching will put into practice what is learned throughout the workshop. This seminar is specifically adapted to the needs of scientists and engineers, with particular focus on technical writing, process descriptions, describing data, and other specific needs for science scholars.

 Content:

  • key academic vocabulary (drawn from the Academic Word List, among other sources)
  • sentence structure and paragraph building
  • academic writing style
  • discourse markers and coherence
  • describing graphs and presenting data
  • expressing cause and effect relationships
  • false friends
  • collocations
  • punctuation, footnotes and bibliographies
  • various types of texts (e.g. abstract, conference paper, thesis)
